Graduated from
the Medical school of the University of the Republic the 6th
December of 1969.

In August 1972
he had a degree as Specialist in Oncology and Radiotherapy.

Professor level 5 in Radio therapeutic Oncology of the
Medical School Since 1987.

In 1989
he was elected Mayor of Montevideo, assuming the 15th
of February of 1990.

(1990-1994)
Member of the Mayor National Congress and President of it
during the exercise of 1993.

Proclaimed by
the Progressive Encounter
- Wide Front as candidate to
the Presidency of the Republic in July 1994.
-
President of the Progressive Encounter since December 1994.

He
was Proclaimed President of the Wide Front in the Second
Extraordinary Congress of the Wide Front, the 22 December
of 1996.

In November
1998, he was confirmed President of the Wide Front in the 3rd
National Congress of the Wide Front.

The 26 June of
1999 he was proclaimed in the National Convention of the
Progressive Encounter- Wide Front, candidate to the
Presidency of the Republic for the elections of that year.
He was the candidate most voted.

The 23 of September 2001, in the IV Ordinary Congress of
the Wide Front, he was named again President of the Wide
Front.

The 21 December
of 2003
in the IV Extraordinary Congress of the Wide Front he was
proclaimed candidate to the Presidency of the Republic for
the elections of 2004.

The 31 October
of 2004 in the National elections he was elected in the
first round President of Uruguay.

March of 2005, for a 5 years period, he assume the
